Hip-hop was a cultural movement in some way similar to the Hippies, but not always totally peaceful or within the law. It attained widespread popularity in the 1980s and ’90s and it was largely associated with rap music.
Rap Music was a type of music that combined actual popular music with a rhyming speech that very often had the intention of releasing messages to the public, usually not so positive, but sometimes not so deprived of good intentions. This musical style became one of the most relevant identifiers of the Hip-Hop culture. Other parts of the culture were graffiti, loud music, dressing styles not so aesthetic, and some other minor ones.
Although widely considered a synonym for rap music, the term hip-hop comprehended four main elements: deejaying, or “turntabling”; rapping, also known as “MCing” or “rhyming”; graffiti painting, also known as “graf” or “writing”; and “B-boying,” which encompasses hip-hop dance, style, and attitude. Along with the sort of virile body language that philosopher Cornel West described as “postural semantics.”
A fifth element, “Knowledge of self/consciousness,” is sometimes added to the list of hip-hop elements, particularly by socially conscious hip-hop artists and scholars.
Hip-hop originated in the predominantly African American economically depressed South Bronx section of New York City more or less at the beginning of the 1980s. As the hip-hop movement began at society’s margins, its origins are shrouded in myth, enigma, and obfuscation.
This costume reflects deeply the Hip-Hop culture, although unfortunately, does not include the oversized radio seen in the image. It is still common to see people, especially young men, wear pants that can show part of the top of their underwear, and sometimes overly wide clothes that kind of look as falling off.
Still, rap music is often heard and favored by many people.
Wear this costume and you may become, or look,
