It is extremely difficult to accurately know if this palette knife oil painting was actually brought to life by Chen Ping, (or Ping Chen, as he prefers to be called), perhaps when he had just arrived in Australia when he was around 32 y.o. It may be possible that the signature on the left side of this painting, which reads "P. Chen" may have been coincidentally or purposely used by a different palette knife painter, using a similar, probably early painting style of Ping Chen. The colors of this painting somehow reflect Ping Chen's painting style. It is necessary to mention that at present, Ping Chen's style is far more alternative to reality than some of his early creations. In this painting, it is still very easy to identify houses, animals, and other elements in the painting. Whereas, the new Ping's paintings are far more abstract, and elements on his paintings are rather difficult to identify especially at the beginning of observing his paintings, and probably that is one of the reasons he has now become so well known.
Regardless if this painting is one by Ping Chen, it is still very well painted, and almost impossible to forget its content once you have seen it for the first time.
Ping Chen is a Chinese-born, born in 1962, artist who relocated to Tasmania in 1994. Renowned for his synesthetic paintings, his art reflects an academic understanding of drawing and vibrant landscapes. His works primarily consist of oil on canvas pieces, showcasing landscapes, portraits, and scenes featuring familiar themes.
Ping Chen, was initially schooled in China, where he finally enrolled in the prestigious Sub-High School, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art, Guangzhou, and was awarded a Certificate in 1981 at the early age of 19. He also undertook further studies at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art for a BFA (Education) in 1985.
After 1994 he migrated to Australia and now he also holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) from the School of Art, University of Tasmania from 1997. Chen, or Ping, as he prefers to be called, is a regular exhibitor at international art fairs, for instance at The Personal Structures Exhibition, part of the Venice Biennale in 2013 and again in 2017.
A very special piece of information is that In 2014 his "Unseen Mountain" was the official gift of the Tasmanian Government to Chinese President Xi Jinping and Madame Peng Liyuan.
Chen, or Ping, maintains traditional Chinese cultural values while exploring concepts from a contemporary Western perspective. His exceptional academic understanding of drawing influences his coherent and synesthetic paintings, where the broad strokes of color of landscapes and the thin lines of peak ranges, and also of old Chinese characters are composed to produce a dialectic mental activity within many of his observers and followers.
At present, Ping Chen resides mainly in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, although he is now globally known and travels outside Australia quite often, especially Beijing.
The size of this framed pallet-knife oil painting is 36.5cm (14.4") x 48.5cm (19"), and the thickness of the frame is 29mm. The frame is in fine condition, despite the probable old age.
The actual painting equivalent canvas is 30.5cm (12") x 40.64cm (16"). The shipping weight of this item is over 1 kg, however, it appears in the features of the item as only 1 Kg to make shipping more economical for the lucky buyer.
