The word or term Gothic was initially related to the Goths, who were  
a nomadic Germanic people who were enemies of the Roman Empire early between 267 and early 400s A.D..  Largely, the Goths were responsible for the final downfall of the Roman Empire. The descendants of the Goths, once Rome had lost its power, established the beginning of the medieval period in Europe.

In the very old days of the 4th century AD, Goths used to wear a square or rectangular cloak made of coarse wool, fastened usually on the right shoulder, which were also worn by early Germans, and soldiers of ancient Rome. These cloaks were fastened using a spike made out of bone. They also wore fur blankets, coats and warm clothes made from animals which  they used to skin.


In modern times,  the new Gothic fashion is more one of rebellious style marked by dark, mysterious, old, and often features unrelated to gender.   This costume, however, depicts those old historic times when the Goths had already conquered Rome.
